With 35 years of research and clinical experience with couples, John and Julie Gottman have developed a new approach to couples therapy that is unique in the field for its power to strengthen romantic relationships. In this new and revised workshop, presented for the first time, the Gottmans describe their groundbreaking research, which can predict marital stability with 94 percent accuracy. Myths of what makes relationships work are dispelled, and truths that have emerged from “The Gottman Love Lab” are described. Participants will be taught key assessment techniques that work to pinpoint the strengths and challenges of a relationship and to fine-tune interventions. In this process, three systems will be introduced. The Friendship System is the building block for intimacy, passion, and good sex. The Conflict System includes tools to manage solvable problems and to dialogue constructively about unsolvable problems. The Meaning System contains the existential foundation of the relationship and the shared roles, goals, and values that create its culture. Participants will also be introduced to the intricacies of treating co-morbidities of relationship distress, including special attention on the treatment of affairs. The Gottmans teach with a combination of warmth, humour, lecture, role-playing, and films straight out of the clinical office. John Gottman, PhD, is world-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, involving the study of emotions, physiology, and communication. He was recently voted as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Therapists of the past quarter-century by the Psychotherapy Networker magazine. His 30 years of breakthrough research on marriage and relationships has earned him numerous major awards. He is the author of 190 published academic articles and author or co-author of 40 books. Dr. Gottman is the co-founder of the Gottman Institute, where he currently teaches weekend workshops for couples and training workshops for clinicians. Julie Schwartz Gottman, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist. She is the co-founder and clinical director of the Gottman Institute, where she co-teaches weekend workshops for couples and advanced training workshops for therapists. Dr. Julie Gottman is also the designer and clinical director for Loving Couples Loving Children, a curriculum for couples suffering from the effects of poverty. With her husband, she has also co-designed a study of treatment for minor domestic violence, which is being conducted by the Relationship Research Institute. Julie specializes in working with distressed couples, abuse and trauma survivors, those with substance abuse problems and their partners, and cancer patients and their families.
