What you need to do to be heard as a person with autism depends on the spectrum of abilities and communication challenges that are unique to you. But guess what? That’s the same answer for people who are neurotypical! As John Elder Robison so eloquently points out here, many of the strategies that people with autism need can in fact benefit all people: “We are really like the canaries in a coalmine. You know we say we can’t function without these things but in fact if you offered those same therapies to every student in school there’s not a one who couldn’t potentially benefit from at least some of them.”
