Psychotherapy has primarily focused on ameliorating symptoms and psychopathology. This is in contrast to positive psychology, which has focused on bringing about “flourishing,” though not in a clinical setting with patients seeking psychotherapy, and certainly not dyadically. Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) seeks to bridge the two traditions by both relieving suffering through processing the painful negative emotions of trauma to completion and then going on to foster flourishing, in session and beyond, through a technique called metatherapeutic processing, which will be the focus of this two-part workshop.
In metatherapeutic processing, there is a focus on savoring and exploring the positive affects that accompany the change process itself in the context of the therapeutic dyad, which can set into motion an upward spiral of positive affect that broadens and builds the experience of transformation and enhances the AEDP treatment’s effectiveness. That upward spiral is sometimes a dyadic upward transformational spiral, involving dyadic transformational processes.
Diana Fosha will provide a how-to primer on metatherapeutic processing and use extensive videotaped material from actual sessions from three different cases to illustrate the application of the technique. These clinical examples will bring to life how metatherapeutic processing can organically foster, from the bottom-up, positive feeling states, in AEDP labeled transformational affects, such as gratitude, love, hope, curiosity, and zest, freeing up these vital energies within the client. While metatherapeutic processing is central within the framework of AEDP, Diana will discuss how it is a technique that can be integrated into a wide variety of psychotherapies, of different orientations, to activate both in session flourishing and beyond.
At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees will be better able to —
- Define metatherapeutic processing
- Discover the healing power of explicit relational interventions
- Learn powerful new ways to facilitate, deepen, and strengthen change for the better through metatherapeutic processing
- Practice key intervention skills
- Name 3 transformational affects
