Working with complex trauma often requires more than standard EMDR protocols. Clinicians may encounter blocked processing, dissociation, chronic dysregulation, and protective responses that interfere with reprocessing and limit treatment effectiveness. This advanced training is designed to support experienced EMDR clinicians in navigating these challenges with greater clarity and confidence.
This workshop explores how trauma is stored and expressed within the nervous system and how unintegrated ego states and protective parts can disrupt adaptive processing. Participants will learn to recognize when clients are operating from survival-based states and how to respond with interventions that increase safety, stability, and engagement in treatment.
Integrating Somatic and Ego State Approaches
Participants will learn how to integrate somatic awareness and ego state conceptualization within the eight phases of EMDR, including preparation, assessment, reprocessing, and installation. The training emphasizes practical tools for working with both highly activated and shut-down nervous systems, supporting clinicians in adapting their approach to meet the needs of complex trauma presentations.
Addressing Blocks and Dissociative Responses
This training provides concrete strategies for managing looping or blocked processing and addressing dissociative responses that commonly arise in complex trauma work. Participants will explore when and how to use modified EMDR approaches, including ego state–informed interventions, titration, restricted processing, and targeted interweaves to maintain safety while continuing trauma processing.
Strengthening Clinical Decision-Making
A central focus of this workshop is clinical decision-making. Participants will strengthen their ability to assess readiness for reprocessing, identify underlying attachment and developmental trauma themes, and differentiate between trauma responses, ego state interference, and adaptive protective strategies. This supports more effective treatment planning, reduces therapist burnout, and increases confidence when working with complex cases.
Applying Skills to Complex Clinical Work
Throughout the training, real-world clinical examples are used to bridge theory and practice. Participants will leave with immediately applicable strategies to improve session flow, reduce treatment stagnation, and support more durable therapeutic outcomes. This training is particularly beneficial for clinicians seeking to refine their EMDR practice and expand their capacity to work effectively with complex trauma.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to —
- Identify somatic and ego state indicators of complex trauma that interfere with standard EMDR reprocessing.
- Differentiate between trauma-based activation, ego state interference, and adaptive protective strategies during EMDR phases.
- Apply somatic and ego state–informed interventions within the EMDR eight-phase protocol to enhance stabilization and reprocessing.
- Demonstrate the use of modified EMDR strategies, including titration, restricted processing, and targeted interweaves.
- Integrate advanced EMDR conceptualization skills into treatment planning to improve clinical effectiveness and reduce treatment stagnation.
This training offers 6 hours of direct contact (not counting breaks or lunch). It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.
Please note: EMDRIA credits and CE hours are two different things. This training is not EMDRIA-recognized and does not count toward EMDRIA credits. The 6 hours of direct contact above are CE hours, subject to verification by your own regulatory body.
Attendees of the original live broadcast receive instructions on how to obtain their Certificate of Participation at the end of the course and in the “recording ready” email, which is sent 1-2 days after the live course has ended.
Attendees watching the previously recorded/on-demand version must complete a Post-Webinar Quiz with a passing grade of at least 80% to verify their attendance and receive their Certificate of Participation.
Note: The course recording is available only after the live broadcast has ended.
The Certificate of Participation includes:
- Name of participant.
- Title of training.
- Name of presenter plus their credentials.
- Number of hours of training.
- Date of training.
- Confirmation of 100% attendance at the original live broadcast OR a passing grade of at least 80% on the recorded on-demand version post-course quiz.
