DBT: Beyond the Basics

Led by Sheri Van Dijk, MSW, RSW

Saturday, May 11, 2019

9:00am – 4:40pm

Many therapists have been introduced to core concepts of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) through Sheri Van Dijk’s first workshop, Calming the Emotional Storm, and her book of the same title. This one-day “Beyond the Basics” workshop is intended for clinicians with a basic understanding of DBT who want to develop increasingly sophisticated and targeted interventions through —

  • Exploring how to teach some of the more complex, nuanced DBT skills (e.g. nonjudgemental stance, radical acceptance, opposite action) in relation to complex presentations such as bipolar disorder, concurrent disorder, eating disorder and self-harm
  • Discussing what to do when your interventions don’t seem to be moving your client forward
  • Taking a closer look at the role of the DBT consultation team and putting this approach into practice with small group exercises, as well as through case consultation with the larger group

Participants are invited to bring case examples and to submit specific issues prior to the workshop after registering. This experiential and collaborative training will help expand your knowledge of DBT strategies and skills through lecture, role play, video analysis of clients and practical exercises.

  • How you can apply DBT skills to your own personal and professional life, and how the skills will help to reduce feelings of ineffectiveness and burnout with clients
  • How to enhance your skills in validating and being nonjudgemental in order to help your clients learn to tolerate their emotional experiences and move forward
  • About a behaviour theory perspective to help you analyze what might be keeping clients stuck
  • How to work as part of a DBT consultation team
