On February 24, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed the city of Bergamo in Italy. For two months, the whole district suffered a shock wave of infections, hospitals without beds, saturated intensive care, and oxygen starvation. All this while trying to also manage thousands of people with severe symptoms as quickly as possible.
This collective emergency that hit Bergamo led to many deaths and mourning. And sadly, people were unable to experience the common rites of passage for death due to the COVID lockdown.
During this time, psychotherapist Nicole Adami took responsibility for overseeing the psychological support care for nurses who worked on the front line in Bergamo. She activated a call for politicians to create collective funeral rites aimed at helping affected people manage traumatic grieving.
At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be better able to—
- Examine how the collective emergency in Bergamo developed
- Explore psychological support interventions utilized during the Bergamo emergency
- Explore the impact on the Bergamo population, including grieving while in isolation
- Identify the importance of mourning rites and the effects of their denial
