This workshop focuses on the psychological impacts of collective trauma and current related clinical work. Our starting point is the psychological effect of massive, overwhelming trauma. We will then explore the potential immediate and long-term effects of collective trauma. This includes the possibility of activating unprocessed transgenerational traumatic experiences as well as the potential for traumatic growth.
Your presenters (both psychoanalysts living in Hungary) will share a diary they have kept since March 2020. In it – through their our own subjective filter and using analytical listening – they have documented pieces of reality accumulating within themselves and their patients. The goal of the diary has been to capture and record changes in mood, everyday events, what happened in therapy, and their own experiences.
This workshop will also share clinical observations gained from therapeutic work with people who have been deeply affected by trauma induced by the COVID pandemic. We will also step back to examine and establish the more general psychological characteristics of large-group traumas.

Tihamer Bako, PhD, Hab, is a psychologist, psychotherapist, and training and supervising psychoanalyst at the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Society (IPA member).
Dr. Bako is also a training and supervising psychodramatist at the Hungarian Psychodramatical Society. He has authored several papers and books on the topics of trauma, crisis, suicide, mass trauma, transgenerational trauma, and supervision. He also co-authored the book Transgenerational Trauma and Therapy, The Transgenerational Atmosphere.
Tihamer Bako also participates in an international project entitled ‘Transgeneration Transfer of Holocaust Trauma – Prevention and Care’, supported by Visegrad Fund. He maintains a private practice in Budapest, Hungary.
Zana Katalin, MD, PhD, is a medical doctor, psychotherapist, and psychoanalyst at the Hungarian Psychoanalytical Society (IPA member).
Dr. Katalin is the author of several papers and books on the topics of trauma, mass trauma, transgenerational trauma, narrative, and creativity. She co-authored the book Transgenerational Trauma and Therapy, The Transgenerational Atmosphere. She also participates in an international project entitled ‘Transgeneration Transfer of Holocaust Trauma – Prevention and Care’, supported by Visegrad Fund.
Zana Katalin is a member of the Central European work team (CES) that focuses on Post-Bionian Field Theory. She maintains a private practice in Budapest, Hungary.
