PTSD vs CPTSD

When trauma occurs early in life and involves ongoing or repetitive exposure to traumatic events, we refer to as CPTSD (complex post-traumatic stress disorder). Unlike PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), complex PTSD often involves additional symptoms like emotion regulation, identity and self-worth issues, and relationship difficulties.

What We Know About CPTSD

According to the Cleveland Clinic, although complex PTSD is a newer diagnosis, experts estimate it may affect up to 8% of the world population. We know that traumatic stress can change how a person’s brain function. In fact, studies suggest trauma can cause permanent changes in key areas of our brain, including the:

  • Amygdala (responsible for processing fear and other emotions)
  • Hippocampus (responsible for learning and memory)
  • Prefrontal cortex (involved in executive functions like planning, decision-making, personality expression, and controlling social behaviour)

And some studies also reveal that these changes in the brain are more severe in people with complex PTSD.

As our understanding of trauma and CPTSD continues to evolve, so does our understanding of how to effectively treat it.

Developing An Integrated Approach to CPTSD

In this online course, DBT expert Sheri Van Dijk shares essential skills to help you and your clients get unstuck in treatment.

We begin by reviewing the latest, evidence-based principles for treating CPTSD, including:

  • the differences between PTSD and complex PTSD.
  • theories to inform treatment of clients with complex trauma histories.
  • skills to help clients ground and regulate emotions.

We then explore Polyvagal Theory and the theory of structural dissociation of the personality. Together, these theories form a practical frame of reference we can use to conceptualize clients.

Refining CPTSD Treatment

We finish by reviewing Polyvagal strategies that we can use to take a parts approach to treating clients with CPTSD. To assist clients with emotion regulation, we also examine additional treatment skills, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and grounding exercises.

Join Sheri on this journey into the nuanced realm of complex PTSD, shedding light on its distinct features and impact on brain function. Equip yourself with the insights and strategies you need to refine your CPTSD treatment approach and effectively navigate its complexities.

  • Differentiate between PTSD and CPTSD.
  • Name the three phases in the treatment of complex PTSD.
  • Understand the basics of Polyvagal Theory and the theory of structural dissociation of the personality.
  • Understand dissociation and its implications for therapy.
  • Learn some of the basics of how to use a parts approach in therapy.
  • Learn skills to help ground and regulate clients, as well as resources to help prepare clients for trauma processing therapy.
