A secure sense of connection with self and others is the major predictor of resilience and growth in the face of adversity pinpointed by attachment science.

EFIT–the individual form of Emotionally Focused Therapy (best known as a potent couple intervention)—systematically shapes emotional balance, confidence, and competence in managing vulnerability and so an expansion of the self.

This presentation offers an overview of the practice of EFIT with trauma survivors together with the observation of sessions and experiential exercises. The map to human vulnerability and strength provided by attachment theory allows the EFIT therapist to move into and through difficult emotions. It also allows them to create core emotional epiphanies where a client’s sense of self and the ability to integrate traumatic experience is transformed.

The 5 moves of the EFIT Tango move the client out of reactive flooding and numbing into active confident engagement with traumatic experience. New emotions evoke new capacities and new response repertoires.

At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be better able to—

  • Identify the key principles and perspectives of EFIT.
  • Outline both micro and macro interventions, specifically the EFIT Tango.
  • Plan for common blocks to effective treatment that occur in session.
