This live workshop builds on Letting Go of the Work You Love: Navigating Retirement for Therapists with Integrity and Compassion and is one of two advanced trainings designed to take you deeper into the clinical and ethical dimensions of retirement and professional transition.

This workshop focuses specifically on the thoughtful, ethical and compassionate closure of therapeutic relationships. Its companion workshop, Understanding Retirement Anxiety: Clinical Strategies for Identity, Purpose, and Life Transition, explores the emotional and psychological concerns that can arise for both therapists and clients during retirement and major life transitions.

How therapy ends is just as important as how it begins. Yet while clinicians receive extensive training in building rapport, assessing client needs, and guiding treatment, far less attention is given to one of the most clinically significant—and ethically sensitive—phases of care: ending treatment.

When termination is not handled thoughtfully, it can undermine therapeutic gains, intensify distress, create confusion, and expose clinicians to ethical risk. In contrast, a well-managed ending can consolidate progress, strengthen autonomy, and become a meaningful and transformative part of the therapeutic process.

Understanding Ethical Risks in Termination

This practical and clinically rich training explores the five major ethical concerns that can arise when endings are mishandled, including failure to terminate, premature termination, abandonment, boundary violations, and inadequate planning for continuity of care. Participants will gain clarity on how to determine when treatment has reached an appropriate conclusion and how to avoid the risks of ending too soon—or too late.

Navigating Planned and Unplanned Endings

Participants will learn structured approaches to both planned and unexpected terminations. The workshop introduces practical tools such as in-session conversation frameworks, outreach scripts, and clinical markers that signal readiness for closure. Special attention is given to the psychological dynamics that often emerge as therapy comes to an end, including client reactions shaped by attachment patterns.

Working with Complex and High-Risk Cases

Ending treatment can be particularly challenging when working with high-risk, trauma-affected, self-harming, or highly dependent clients. This training provides guidance on managing these complex scenarios while maintaining ethical integrity and client safety. Participants will also explore therapist countertransference reactions—such as guilt, grief, avoidance, or relief—and how these responses can influence clinical decision-making.

Creating Meaningful and Ethical Closure

Participants will review the essential logistics of ethical case closure, including referrals, documentation, record retention, professional wills, and continuity of care planning. The training also emphasizes how to transform final sessions into powerful clinical interventions through therapeutic summaries, metaphors, and intentional closure practices that support long-term client integration and growth.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to —

  • Differentiate between premature termination and failure to terminate and explain the risks associated with each.
  • Identify the distinctions between planned and unplanned endings and apply clinical strategies to guide each process.
  • Evaluate the role of client and therapist attachment styles in shaping emotional responses to termination.
  • Apply strategies for managing complex terminations, including work with dependent, high-risk, or trauma-affected clients.
  • Implement boundary-setting techniques to address last-minute disclosures while maintaining therapeutic focus.
  • Design meaningful closure interventions, including therapeutic summaries and integration strategies to support client outcomes.

This workshop addresses ethical and professional practice considerations related to clinical endings, termination, boundaries, and continuity of care. Participants are encouraged to confirm applicability toward ethics/CPD requirements with their own regulatory body.

This training offers 3 hours of direct contact (not counting breaks or lunch). It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.
