In this presentation, Judith will refer briefly to Climate Science before describing the human health impacts of climate change. In particular, she will focus on the mental health and psychological impacts of climate change. These include:
- the effects of increased heat on mental health admissions;
- the traumatic effects of slow (repeated droughts) and fast (floods/storms) disasters; and
- the contemporary understanding of eco- and climate distress.
Judith will discuss the colonial mind antecedents of the combined climate, biodiversity, and environmental crises we face. And she will touch on Sally Weintrobe’s concept of the “climate of un-care”. Specifically, Judith will explore the role that the psychological professional can play, and indeed must play, in understanding the situation we are in. This necessitates the practitioner being in relationship with their own eco-emotions.
Judith will also look at what we mean by “resilience” and describe different emotional methodologies that can contribute to individual and societal resilience. She will critique the traditional “one-to-one in the consulting room” model of psychological treatment. And she will share how psychological practitioners can contribute to their communities in ways that draw on therapeutic skills but are not psychotherapy.
- Develop an overview of the mental health/emotional consequences of climate change
- Understand the impact of colonial thinking on the challenges we face
- Understand that the practitioner needs their journey through their own eco emotions
- Understand how psychological professionals can contribute to the existential crisis we are facing toward individual and societal resilience.
Judith Anderson, MB, ChB, MA, is a Jungian Analytical Psychotherapist with a background in psychiatry.
Interested in the intersection of psychotherapy and societal issues, Judith chaired Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility in the UK for several years. She has particularly focused on the climate crisis for over 15 years and is currently Chair of Climate Psychology Alliance, an organization with an international reach that researches, publishes and develops methods of therapeutic support. The organization also provides CPD for psychological professionals, has a particular concern for Youth, and offers talks and consultation for organizations and businesses.
