Free Virtual Chat with Lawrence Murphy, MA | Thursday, September 17, 2026 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm ET

A Free, Live Virtual Conversation on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and the Future of Therapy

Join us for One-on-One with Lawrence Murphy, a free, live virtual event on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 12:00–1:00 pm ET.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how people seek information, emotional support, and mental health care. For therapists, these developments create exciting possibilities—but also important questions about privacy, clinical responsibility, informed consent, attachment, and the therapeutic relationship.

Join Michael Kerman, President of Leading Edge Seminars, for a timely conversation with Lawrence Murphy, a pioneer in online counselling and ethical technology-assisted therapy.

Lawrence founded Worldwide Therapy Online, one of the earliest online clinical practices, in 1994 and later helped develop one of the first ethical codes for online counselling. His work has consistently explored how therapists can respond thoughtfully and responsibly as technology reshapes clinical practice.

This free One-on-One event offers therapists an opportunity to meet Lawrence, learn from his decades of experience, and explore some of the questions clinicians need to consider as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly present in their clients’ lives and professional practices.

The conversation will also offer a preview of Lawrence’s upcoming webinar, Artificial Intelligence or Artificial Intimacy? Risks, Ethics, and Clinical Impact for Mental Health Professionals

Get to Know Lawrence Murphy

Lawrence Murphy has worked at the intersection of psychotherapy, ethics, and digital technology for more than three decades.

Long before virtual counselling became commonplace, Lawrence recognized that technology would transform the ways therapists and clients communicate. Through Worldwide Therapy Online, his teaching, and his published work, he has helped clinicians understand that adopting new technology requires more than learning how it works—it also requires careful attention to privacy, security, clinical skill, and ethical responsibility.

During this One-on-One conversation, Michael will explore Lawrence’s professional journey and the experiences that have shaped his approach. Lawrence will discuss:

  • What first drew him to online and technology-assisted counselling
  • Lessons from the early development of online therapy that remain relevant today
  • How his thinking has evolved from email-based therapy to artificial intelligence
  • The relationship between technological innovation and ethical clinical practice
  • Common misconceptions therapists may have about AI in mental health care

Lawrence’s experience offers a valuable historical perspective on today’s rapidly changing clinical landscape.

Exploring Lawrence’s Work and Approach

Artificial intelligence is not simply changing the tools therapists use. It is also influencing how clients understand themselves, seek emotional support, and form relationships with technology.

In this portion of the conversation, Michael and Lawrence will consider the deeper clinical and relational questions raised by AI, including:

  • Why some clients are turning to chatbots and AI companions for emotional support
  • How attachment theory may help clinicians understand relationships with AI
  • The difference between using AI as a supportive tool and allowing it to replace essential elements of therapy
  • How clinicians can evaluate AI without responding from either fear or uncritical enthusiasm
  • Real-world examples that illustrate both the opportunities and risks of AI-supported mental health care
  • How therapists can remain grounded in human connection as technology becomes more sophisticated

The discussion will encourage therapists to move beyond the question of whether AI is simply “good” or “bad” and begin developing a more thoughtful framework for evaluating its use.

Sneak Peek at Lawrence’s Upcoming Webinar

In the final portion of the conversation, Michael will guide the discussion toward Lawrence’s upcoming webinar on artificial intelligence, ethics, and clinical practice.

They will explore:

  • The most pressing ethical issues associated with AI in therapy
  • Privacy, confidentiality, informed consent, and responsible data use
  • The risks of entering identifiable client information into AI platforms
  • How AI may be used for documentation, treatment planning, research, or administrative support
  • How therapists can respond when clients bring AI-generated advice into sessions
  • The importance of understanding the limits and biases of artificial intelligence
  • Principles clinicians can use to evaluate emerging technologies as they continue to evolve
  • Practical changes therapists can make to use—or choose not to use—AI more responsibly

Rather than focusing only on particular platforms, Lawrence’s webinar will help clinicians develop ethical reasoning skills that can continue to guide them as AI technology changes.
