White supremacist values and heteropatriarchal ideologies still prevail today. Their impact on psychology and how they reflect both obvious and insidious power/subjugation dynamics that perpetuate collective trauma need to be examined, both clinically and theoretically.
In this presentation, Pat will share the impact of these perspectives on psychotherapy. She will explore the influence of history, culture, racism, and biases toward those we perceive to be unlike ourselves. She will also examine the importance of contextualizing treatment within an historical perspective (recent and distant, individual, and societal). In addition, Pat will address the current political culture and ongoing systemic trauma.
Collective trauma leaves a profound imprint on the body. It also leaves a profound imprint on the behaviors within and between groups of people with different social locations and identities. The role of posture and body movement are essential to interrupting power/subjugation dynamics and the transmission of transgenerational trauma. They are also integral to encouraging resilience and healing.
At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be better able to—
- Evaluate western perspectives in contemporary psychology that contribute to collective trauma
- Analyze power/subjugation dynamics in terms of the posture and movement of the body
- Assess the role contextualization in psychotherapy practice
