Preparing Clients for Court – A Complex Journey

For mental health professionals, the journey of supporting clients who are survivors of crime is complex and multifaceted. This is especially true when these clients face the daunting task of preparing for court. But this course will empower clinicians in Canada with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively guide clients through the challenging court process.

This webinar provides an in-depth understanding of trauma-informed therapeutic techniques, legal procedures, and the vital collaborative role that clinicians play within the legal framework. It begins with a detailed exploration of the trauma response and the essential initial steps involved in reporting a crime to the police. You will learn effective strategies to build trust with your clients. And you’ll gain a thorough understanding of the legal rights and protections afforded to crime survivors in Canada.

The Emotional Toll of Testifying in Court

The core of this online course centers on preparing clients for the demands of testifying in court. This includes:

  • Mastering trauma-informed techniques.
  • Engaging in role-play scenarios to simulate courtroom experiences.
  • Navigating the ethical considerations inherent in the testifying process.

You will develop practical skills to help clients manage the emotional toll of testifying and enduring cross-examination. This will ensure you are well-prepared to support your clients’ mental health throughout the legal proceedings.

Post-Trial Support

Beyond preparing clients for court appearances, we’ll also address post-trial support, including the preparation of victim impact statements. This holistic approach ensures you are equipped to support clients during the trial as well as assist them in their recovery and empowerment afterward.
