What if the emotional disconnection you see in clients could be the very doorway to deeper healing?

Discover How to Use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to Heal Disconnection in Relationships

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is one of today’s most powerful, research-based approaches for treating relational distress in individuals, couples, and families. This accessible and engaging two-part, on-demand training is designed for mental health professionals who want to integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy in clinical practice—whether you’re new to the model or seeking to strengthen your skills.

Learn the Foundations of EFT from a Certified Trainer

Led by ICEEFT-certified trainer Dr. James Hawkins, this self-study course offers a practical, compassionate introduction to the core components of EFT. You’ll explore adult attachment theory, the science of emotional processing, and how attachment-related injuries influence client behaviour.

Dr. Hawkins will guide you through the three stages of the EFT model, offering a clear roadmap for helping clients move from conflict and disconnection to safety and engagement. You’ll learn how to embed emotionally focused therapy in clinical practice using structured interventions that promote emotional engagement.

Attendees will also gain tools to assess the quality of digital mental health resources. They’ll learn standardized questions to evaluate technology-based treatments, including smartphone apps.

Master the EFT Tango and Strengthen Relational Bonds

A central feature of this training is learning the five moves of the EFT Tango, a powerful therapeutic tool that helps clients access and share primary emotions in session. This framework supports emotional safety and promotes real-time change.

You’ll learn how to use the EFT Tango to:

  • Slow down reactive cycles
  • Deepen clients’ emotional awareness
  • Promote responsiveness and secure connection

Whether you’re working with couples or individual clients, the EFT Tango provides a replicable structure to apply emotionally focused therapy in clinical practice across a range of presenting issues.

Real-World Applications of Emotionally Focused Therapy in Clinical Practice

Throughout this course, Dr. Hawkins shares practical strategies, clinical demonstrations, and video case examples that illustrate how EFT works in action. You’ll see firsthand how to apply EFT with clients who present high conflict, emotional withdrawal, or unresolved attachment wounds.

These concrete examples will deepen your skill and confidence in using emotionally focused therapy in clinical practice to repair relational injury and foster trust.

Build Clinical Confidence with an Attachment-Based Approach

By the end of this training, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the emotional patterns that drive relational distress—and how to transform those patterns using the EFT model. Integrating emotionally focused therapy in clinical practice will help you guide clients toward more secure, connected, and resilient relationships.

Whether working with individuals, couples, or families, you’ll leave equipped with evidence-based tools to support emotional engagement and lasting change.

  1. Explain the theoretical foundations of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), including adult attachment theory and the role of emotion in shaping relational dynamics.
  2. Identify and interrupt negative interaction cycles contributing to relational distress.
  3. Apply the five moves of the EFT Tango to guide session structure and emotional engagement.
  4. Facilitate clients’ exploration of primary emotional experiences to support new patterns of responsiveness.
  5. Implement strategies to repair attachment injuries, including withdrawer re-engagement and pursuer softening.
  6. Integrate EFT interventions into clinical work with diverse client presentations and relationship challenges.

This training offers 6 hours of direct contact (not counting breaks or lunch). It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.

Attendees of the original live broadcast receive instructions on how to obtain their Certificate of Participation at the end of the course and in the “recording ready” email, which is sent 1-2 days after the live course has ended.

Super helpful in reinforcing the importance of stage 2, how to do it and the persistence that is required to go around the blocks that the client throws up.

I found this very helpful for my practice. As a therapist who specializes in attachment related trauma and child sexual abuse, I often get referrals where one partner is a survivor. I am so thankful that one of the couples who participated had this type of situation because James' insight and wisdom is going to be so helpful for me to guide these couples to healing their relationship fractures. I really wish the presentation was one day longer!

James is an amazing teacher and therapist. I learned so much. I do not work with couples but can still apply many of the strategies and approaches to individual or family work.

The two case studies presented were very good for demonstrating EFT in action. The pauses and comments by James very helpful too. I believe I learned more from that than from hearing about theory.
