Of all the disorders for which psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy research shows promise, the most dramatic results to date are found with trauma therapy treatment.

In fact, a Phase III study using MDMA for serious trauma has yielded remarkable results. Reductions in symptoms greatly surpassed what has been seen with other interventions.

How does psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy work to resolve trauma? What are the mechanisms of action this type of trauma therapy illuminates? How can clinicians working in other modalities harness these mechanisms to enhance treatment? How might we cultivate the attitudes that are effective in psychedelic-assisted work without pharmacological assistance?

Join Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, one of the world’s leading authorities on trauma therapy, and Dr. Ron Siegel, as they explore these questions.

You’ll learn how to help clients safely open to experiences that have been pushed out of awareness to heal trauma. This webinar will be useful to clinicians with or without prior experience in either trauma treatment or psychedelic-assisted therapy.

You will learn—

  • What research into psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy can teach us about mechanisms of trauma and its resolution
  • How to help clients reintegrate split-off experiences in a way that avoids retraumatization
  • Techniques for enhancing safety inside and outside of the clinical hour
  • Ways to help clients regulate their nervous system’s response to traumatic memories
  • How the holding provided by transpersonal experiences frequently encountered in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy might be accessed in psychotherapy more broadly

Bessel van der Kolk, MD, has spent his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences. He has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of trauma therapy treatments for stress in children and adults.

In 1984, Dr. van der Kolk  set up one of the first clinical/research centres in the United States dedicated to the study and treatment of traumatic stress. Bessel was also involved in the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD as a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes. He led the first research linking BPD and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood.

Much of Dr. van der Kolk’s research has focused on how trauma has a unique impact at different stages of development and how disruptions in caregiving systems obstruct effective intervention. His work helped establish the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). This congressionally mandated initiative funds approximately 150 centres offering interventions and trauma therapy.

Dr. van der Kolk’s efforts also helped establish the Trauma Research Foundation. The Foundation’s clinical team specializes in the treatment of those with histories of child maltreatment. Its research lab studies the effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behaviour, mood, and executive functioning. The Foundation also trains mental health professionals, educators, parent groups, policymakers, and law enforcement personnel.
