The international trauma of living through and with a pandemic has an impact that can be felt long into the future. More than two years into COVID, we still live in the ‘ambient anxiety’ of 24/7 news about virus variants and long-haul symptoms. This only adds stress to an already stressful news environment.
This type of toxic atmosphere fuels the vigilance and persistent worry that are hallmarks of anxiety disorders, creating a feedback loop of anxiety-vigilance-more anxiety. For many, isolation feels like the only safety. But people who have suffered other traumas are especially vulnerable to increased anxiety and the new challenge of re-entry anxiety. They may also demonstrate what is now being called “cave syndrome”.
This presentation offers practical strategies to help any client with anxiety suffer less panic, increase their stress resilience, and block worry (especially health anxiety).
- Recognize the impact of ambient anxiety that increases worry and panic
- Apply effective strategies that eliminate panic
- Utilize cognitive tools to interrupt anxious ruminations
- Assist individuals in reducing re-entry anxiety
- Develop a client’s resilience to cope with reality-based threats while eliminating vigilance
