Understanding the Mental Health Impact of Perimenopause

Perimenopause and menopause are significant life transitions that can affect mood, anxiety, sleep, cognition, relationships, identity, and overall wellbeing. Yet many clinicians receive little formal training on how hormonal changes influence emotional and psychological functioning, leaving them uncertain about how best to support clients navigating this stage of life.

Research suggests that between 20% and 40% of women experience depression during the menopause transition, while many others struggle with anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and emotional overwhelm.

Building Clinical Confidence

As awareness of perimenopause grows, mental health professionals are increasingly being called upon to recognize these concerns, provide effective support, and help clients access appropriate resources and care.

In this practical and interactive training, Kara Cruz will provide clinicians with a foundational understanding of perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, while exploring the complex ways hormonal transitions can affect mental health and daily functioning.

Practical Assessment and Intervention Strategies

Participants will learn how to recognize common symptoms, conduct informed screening and assessment, support client self-advocacy, and identify appropriate interventions and referrals.

Through case examples, discussion, experiential exercises, and evidence-informed strategies, attendees will gain practical tools for supporting women experiencing anxiety, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and other mental health concerns related to perimenopause and menopause.

Inclusive and Client-Centred Care

The training will also explore important considerations when working with both cisgender and transgender clients during the peri/menopause stage, helping clinicians provide informed and inclusive care that recognizes the unique experiences of each client.

Why This Training Matters

Perimenopause and menopause affect every biological woman who lives long enough to experience them, yet many clients report feeling misunderstood, dismissed, or unprepared for the emotional and psychological changes they encounter. Mental health professionals are uniquely positioned to help clients make sense of these experiences, advocate for their needs, and access appropriate supports.

Whether you are already supporting women in midlife or are looking to strengthen your knowledge in this growing area of clinical practice, this training will provide practical, immediately applicable strategies to help you better understand and support clients through one of the most significant transitions in a woman’s lifespan.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to —

  • Describe the differences between perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause.
  • Identify common physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause.
  • Determine how the transition into perimenopause and menopause can impact women’s mental health, mood, and overall wellbeing.
  • Explain how clinicians can promote client self-advocacy and make appropriate referrals to support women navigating perimenopause and menopause.
  • Identify key considerations when working with cisgender and transgender clients during the peri/menopause transition.
  • Utilize appropriate screening tools, interventions, and referral strategies to address anxiety, mood, and sleep-related concerns associated with perimenopause and menopause.
