Over the past few years, we have witnessed the development of knowledge, tools, and international guidelines highlighting the importance of interventions during collective trauma conditions. At the same time, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy has closely followed these developments. Consequently, EMDR was adapted and integrated to work in unstable situations with populations from different cultures, religions, and languages.

To date, the EMDR method has been implemented in a variety of situations. These situations include diverse humanitarian emergencies with vulnerable populations; different stages of trauma; with individuals; and with groups.

Isabel Fernandez will explore in-depth the contribution of EMDR Therapy during recent collective trauma events affecting many populations. She will also share field experiences and scientific publications that support EMDR’s effectiveness in these situations.

It is fundamental to consider the various stages of stress reactions and the most appropriate types of intervention that will help people build resilience and achieve post-traumatic growth. We have all witnessed just how many collective disasters and humanitarian emergencies people and communities are able to not only survive but also overcome and thrive. To achieve this level of resilience, the most vulnerable populations—children in particular—need specific psychological interventions. These interventions must speak the language of trauma. They must also promote symptom reduction to stabilize and develop personal and community protective factors. Current field literature emphasizes the importance of psychological interventions during each stage of trauma. Such interventions will prevent mental disorders, neutralize risk factors, and promote both the ability to adapt and post-traumatic growth.

At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will be better able to:

• Discuss the importance of intervention in the acute phase of trauma, mainly in mass disasters, in order to reduce stress reactions and to prevent accumulation of traumatic stress.
• Identify ways to intervene to reduce risk factors and emotional and mental disorders
• Describe group and community interventions to enhance resources and protection factors
• Discuss how to intervene, before, during and after a humanitarian emergency
• Identify the different levels of exposure and the different types of population in need of support, specially first responders

This training offers 2 hours of direct contact (not counting breaks or lunch). It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.
