Description

Sleep is etiologically important in trauma, as it predicts whether those exposed to a trauma progress to a Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis (Short et al., 2020).

Most treatment providers have limited exposure and training to behavioural sleep medicine. As a result, we know that clinicians often use sleep hygiene as a treatment (e.g., Lachowski, Moss & Carney, 2012) for clients with insomnia and PTSD, even though this treatment is a placebo condition in clinical trials and is not recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Edinger et al., 2021). As a result, there is a knowledge gap in many clinicians’ practices, which could lead to negative outcomes in clients with insomnia and PTSD.

Given that there is a very high prevalence of sleep disorders in those with trauma-related issues and a knowledge gap in those outside the area of sleep medicine, it will immediately enhance the clinician’s practice to know what sleep treatments are empirically supported and how to deliver them in complicated clients suffering from insomnia and PTSD.

This training will teach clinicians:

  1. how to assess for sleep disorders in their clients with trauma histories;
  2. how to deliver Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia Disorder in those with trauma;
  3. how to deliver Imagery Rescripting and Rehearsal Therapy for Nightmare Disorder; and
  4. how to troubleshoot the treatment implementation difficulties that those with trauma.
