Affairs often trigger shock, rage, and deep uncertainty. In the early crisis phase, Dr. Nelson shows how to stabilize the therapeutic space. You’ll learn to support emotional regulation, set safe boundaries, and avoid therapist bias. This betrayal trauma therapy training also explores how triangulation may involve not just the third party—but the therapist too.

Rebuilding Insight After Infidelity

Once emotions settle, couples often need new understanding. This betrayal trauma therapy training teaches how to uncover hidden dynamics and explore the meaning of the affair. You’ll help clients examine implicit versus explicit monogamy, and why misaligned expectations can damage trust. Dr. Nelson also shows how to shift from blame toward accountability.

A New Vision of Monogamy

In the final phase, couples co-create a shared future. Dr. Nelson introduces “new monogamy” agreements based on honesty, emotional clarity, and mutual choice. These frameworks encourage deep connection and help rebuild erotic intimacy over time.

1. Understand infidelity using the three-part definition and how partners are affected in a marriage or committed partnership.
2. Learn the betrayal trauma effects on relationships and how collusion and bias play a part in the secondary gain of the role of the third in infidelity.
3. Identify why the current therapy isn’t working and why some systems of recovery from affairs can retraumatize clients.
4. Identify the three phases of treatment after an affair including the crisis, the insight and the vision phase and how they can improve treatment outcomes.
5. Discover the difference between implicit and explicit monogamy and create new monogamy agreements.
6. Create a revised formula for treatment plans after infidelity breaches, to include long term sustainable monogamy.

This training offers 6 hours of direct contact (not counting breaks or lunch). It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.
